TOUR MAP

ITINERARY BY DAY

Ho Chi Minh City Highlights & Hidden Gems (L)

8:00 AM: Ho Thi Ky Flower Market

Start your day by visiting Ho Thi Ky Flower Market, the largest flower market in Ho Chi Minh City. It’s a vibrant and colorful spot, filled with a wide array of flowers from all over Vietnam. The market provides a unique opportunity to capture the beauty of local life as vendors sell fresh blooms ranging from tropical flowers to seasonal favorites.

Cho Lon – Saigon’s Chinatown & Thien Hau Pagoda

Next, head to Cho Lon, the city’s Chinatown, and visit the Thien Hau Pagoda, dedicated to the Goddess of the Sea. The temple is known for its intricate friezes, carved tableaus, and impressive incense coils, all of which make for excellent photos. This peaceful temple contrasts beautifully with the bustling streets outside.

After exploring the pagoda, hop on a cyclo ride (optional, at your own expense) to experience Saigon from a different perspective. Meander through the narrow alleys of Chinatown and head toward Binh Tay Market, where you’ll find everything from Vietnamese hats to dried squid—perfect for experiencing authentic local commerce.

Drive Along the Canal – Observe the Contrast of Saigon’s Wealth and Poverty

From Chinatown, take a drive along the canal to see a striking contrast between Saigon’s modern development and its poorer neighborhoods. This area will give you a deeper understanding of the socio-economic contrasts within the city, highlighting both its rapid growth and the struggles that some of its residents face.

Lunch Break

Enjoy a delicious lunch at a local restaurant, featuring authentic Vietnamese dishes in a comfortable, off-the-beaten-path spot. This is your chance to taste the flavors of Saigon in a more intimate setting, away from the tourist crowds.

Reunification Palace – A Historic Landmark

After lunch, visit the Reunification Palace, a historic symbol of the South Vietnamese government. It was here, on April 30, 1975, that the Vietnam War came to a dramatic end when a North Vietnamese Army tank crashed through its gates, marking the fall of Saigon. While you won’t be going inside the palace on this leg of the tour, your guide will share the significance of this location and its role in Vietnam’s modern history.

War Remnants Museum – A Harrowing Look at Vietnam’s Darkest Hours

Continue your tour with a visit to the War Remnants Museum, a powerful institution that tells the story of Vietnam’s darkest days during the Vietnam War. The museum houses a large collection of military aircraft, weaponry, and a variety of photographs—some of which are quite graphic—that illustrate the human cost of the conflict. Your guide will provide historical context, helping you understand the impact of the war on the people of Vietnam.

Secret Weapons Hiding Place Museum

Next, step off the tourist trail and head to the Secret Weapons Hiding Place Museum (Bảo tàng Hầm bí mật chứa vũ khí). This hidden underground museum, located right in the heart of Saigon, was used by the North Vietnamese Army to store weapons during the war. It’s an intriguing stop that offers a glimpse into the covert side of the Vietnam War.

Notre Dame Cathedral & Central Post Office

Afterward, head to Notre Dame Cathedral and the Central Post Office, two iconic examples of French colonial architecture. Designed by Gustav Eiffel and completed between 1877 and 1883, these structures still stand proudly today. The Notre Dame Cathedral is an active place of worship and a popular backdrop for wedding photos, while the Central Post Office is an impressive building with ornate details and a grand interior.

Saigon Opera House – A Historic Building with a Unique Story

From the cathedral, take a short walk along Dong Khoi Street to the Saigon Opera House. Originally built as a theatre, the Opera House later served as a bomb shelter and housed the Lower House of the South Vietnamese Parliament. Restored in 1995, it has returned to its roots as a cultural landmark.

TOUR NOTES

The itinerary is flexible and can be tailored to suit your schedule and preferences, ensuring you have an enjoyable and personalized experience. Please note that reservations during peak times (such as Christmas, New Year, Vietnamese Lunar New Year, and National Holidays) may be subject to additional charges.

Saigon also known as Ho Chi Minh City

A most amazing day! Our guide couldn’t be faulted. He was so attentive and conscientious and we are most grateful. We also had a 45 minute rickshaw ride through the markets. The car and driver were also excellent, air conditioned and iced water to keep us hydrated.

At our request our guide took us to a local restaurant where we enjoyed a delicious and traditional soup with rice noodles and beef. We then went on to what is the best known coffee shop to sample their coffees before ending our tour at the war museum. We were passengers on the the Silver Shadow Cruise Ship and will certainly recommend Detoured Asia to any friend coming to Vietnam.

Excellent alternative Saigon tour from cruise ship!

I highly recommend using them if you are looking for a shore excursion from Phu My to Ho Chi Minh and don’t want to use the one from your cruise ship then this private company is an excellent choice. If you know what you want to do in Saigon then they will take you there. If you don’t know what to do or what to see, no worries, they will plan the whole day for you.

They will pick you up with a guide and driver outside the gate but again no worries as it’s a very short walk. The whole day will be spent with an excellent guide. They will have you back to the ship in plenty of time. Also you will have great food as they will take you to the best places to sample the yummy food of Saigon. Good coffee too. I highly recommend using them.

We did on our December cruise and Joseph picked us up at the gate in Phu My and we had the whole day in Saigon. It was a very enjoyable day with him. He is a great ambassador for his country and he tries to make sure his client’s day is exceptional. Two thumbs up for this private tour company! You can also use them if you are not on a cruise. If you are in Saigon and need a guide then this is the company to use… they are the BEST!
